big hero 6 sketches showing how Hiro might ride on Baymax’s back
MORE BIG HERO 6!?
Well, I just put up my website www.ryanlangdraws.com and put up a bunch of Big Hero 6 art, so might as well clutter up everyone’s tumblr feed too?
The top was a painting done early on as an end piece to the movie, where Hiro is happy and Baymax is more of a family member.
Next is a painting from early on in the show. Baymax basically “died” if he was deflated and, if I remember correctly, he was created by Hiro in this version of the story. Yokai also had a gang, with roller girls, a luchador/sumo/mma wrestler, and rocket powered bomber guys.
The rest are images are early concepts of Yokai. I worked with Kevin Nelson on this early incarnation of the microbots. At one point they were more chaotic and organic, and I tried to pitch them as a suit that would be worn as under gear, that provided cooling, nutrients, hydration, and extra strength. I think I called it the M.A.S.S. unit, or Medically Augmented Survival Suit. Comic pseudo science is fun. Anywho, the microbots eventually don’t need Yokai anymore, and try to assume their own identity. The inset images (© their respective owners) were used as pitch/reference images. There was a big push to use existing science to build the microbots, and not just “make stuff up”. I studied insects making living structures, non-newtonian fluids, cymatics…. a bunch of stuff. In the end, I really like what Yokai and the microbots ended up being (made AMAZING by the FX team!!!) but I still like where some of this stuff was going. Just a little look at some of the more explanatory, and not so painterly stuff.
